マーシャル・マクルーハンの功績
現在のポップカルチャーを作り上げた大祭司とも呼ばれているマーシャル・マクルーハンは、もともとはカナダの文学研究者として活躍していました。彼の文学者としての著作には「グーテンベルクの銀河系」などがあります。英文学教授だったマーシャル・マクルーハンの名前が世界的に知られるようになったのは、1960年代に入ってマーシャルがメディアに関する理論を展開した事がきっかけです。それまでは活字文化が一般的だった社会に対して、マーシャル・マクルーハンは活字文化とメディア文化の線引きを主張し、テレビやラジオなどに代表されるメディアは、それ自体が捨てに、情報や命令のようなメッセージを既に含んでいる事を主張しました。
それだけではありません。テクノロジーの発展に伴ってメディアもどんどん多様化することを、マーシャル・マクルーハンは「メディアやテクノロジーは、人間の体の拡張」である事も主張しました。例えば、自転車や自動車などは足の拡張機能、テレビは目の拡張機能、そしてラジオは耳の拡張機能だ、というように、メディアやテクノロジーが人間の身体機能の拡張的な存在である事を主張したのです。
映画や雑誌などにも引っ張りだこだったマーシャル・マクルーハンは、メディアを「ホット」と「クール」に分類したりして、メディア論を展開、メディア研究においては重要な立場を確立する事にもなったようです。
マーシャル・マクルーハンが著したメディア論の著作には、「メディア論・人間の拡張の諸相」「エッセンシャル・マクルーハン」「人間拡張の原理」などがあります。
